Professor Olive is head of the Particle Physics Group at Swansea. Educated in Edinburgh, he obtained his Ph.D. in Cambridge where he spent six years lecturing. A six year stint at CERN in Geneva, enabled him to learn to ski and to help the then new String Theory of elementary particles. After fifteen years as a lecturer and professor at Imperial College, he came to Swansea to help set up the new theoretical physics group. Interspersed with this, he has spent three years in the U.S.A. at the universities of Charlottesville, Pittsburgh, Princeton and Santa Barbara. As well as skiing he enjoys walking, golf and listening to music.
