Obtained his first degree in Mathematics and higher degrees in Physics at the University of Cologne. Worked for eight years as research assistant and lecturer at the Department of Physics, University of Cologne; Department of Chemistry, University of Toronto; and Centre d'Etude Nucleaire Paris. Moved to Swansea in 1984 and was appointed to a Personal Chair in 1992. Head of the Laser Physics Research Group having extensive collaborative research programmes with institutions in the U.K., Germany, Russia and Spain. Has major links with British industry for collaborative research. A musician who plays both the cello and the guitar. Plays tennis, volleyball and basketball.
