Head of Department.
PROFESSOR I G HALLIDAY MA,
MSc (Edin), PhD (Cantab), CPhys, FInstP
Professor Halliday
attended Kelso High-School, Perth Academy
Edinburgh University, Cambridge, Princeton
Imperial College and now Swansea, as
schoolboy, undergraduate, postgraduate,
instructor, research fellow, Professor and
finally Head of department. At Kelso was
indoctrinated with the idea that rugby is
clearly the most important thing in life. In
Perth at age 13 became fascinated by the
interaction of Mathematics and the real world.
Starting from model aeroplanes and the
realisation that the drain on pocket money due
to crashes was somehow tied to getting centres
of gravity in the right place, he progressed
to electronics for the control of said
aeroplanes, thus leading to ever bigger and
more expensive crashes! Nowadays his research
interests are in high energy physics and the
study of particle collisions at the highest
energies, now paid for by the British
taxpayer! Interests outside Physics are
Tennis, Bach, Monteverdi, Golf (where he is
theoretically perfect!), woodwork, . . .
