His interest in physics stemmed originally from reading science fiction novels. After obtaining a first in Cambridge, he played in a rock band for a couple of years and then decided to do a
Ph.D. in theoretical physics at the University of Edinburgh. After gaining his Ph.D. in 1991 he continued his researches at the Los Alamos National Laboratory where he was mainly concerned
with quantum field theory and sub-nuclear processes which may change the relative amounts of matter and anti-matter in the Universe. Besides rock music his other interests include skiing
and flying single-engine aircraft.
