I've got a new machine, how do I connect it to the network?

Firstly see our policy on such machine in [*].

For a wired connection: give/send Dave Payne [*] the mac address, and it'll be registered on the network.

To get the mac address in Linux type ifconfig or /sbin/ifconfig and the mac address is the thing which looks like:

01:A2:3B:C4:5D:E6.

To get the mac address in Windows, go to the Start menu and select Run. Type cmd and press enter. Type ipconfig /all when you see a command prompt and the mac address is the thing which looks like:

01:A2:3B:C4:5D:E6

For a wireless connection:

  1. Goto SWIS and register at http://swis.swan.ac.uk

  2. Input mac address (see above)

  3. Wait for confirmation email.

  4. Download and run the tool setup programme. Note that the tool setup programme works for XP only; W2K and MACs have to be done manually. Linux can be done but it's a pain and LIS only offer rough guidelines support.

For short-term visitors - LIS have generic guest accounts that are activated for the period.

For long-term visitors - LIS can create an account for them for their stay.
